Here's the Scoop

The love was in the air as Kaitlin and Jaclyn celebrated their special day. The happines truly shined through the two, and it was beautiful. The couple shared a joyful first look, a tear-jerking (in a good way, of course) ceremony, and a breathtaking first dance. The couple said “I do” on the lush grounds with a stunning lakeview backdrop. Guests moved to cokctail hour, then were seated for the introductions to the reception. The night concluded with speeches, selfies, and lots and LOTS of dancing! Thank you M2 Photography and their associates for these gorgeous shots.

Jeffrey Miller Catering is thrilled to announce our expansion into Delaware!

We now have two remarkable options in North Wilmington. Both properties are part of Bellevue State Park with proceeds being reinvested into the Delaware State Parks system.

Bellevue Hall – an historic 1930’s Greek revival mansion that was a former DuPont estate; set amid 18 acres of formal gardens, sprawling lawns and spectacular features for a fairytale wedding. Some renovation projects include:

  • refinishing floors in the mansion
  • painting and wiring the commercial kitchen
  • improving the extensive landscaping including planting giant spruce trees
  • landscaping gardens

Cauffiel Estate – a sophisticated restored barn plus a charming and intimate Colonial Revival house with impressive gardens. Some renovation projects include:

  • refinishing floors in the house
  • building a willow fence
  • adding furniture for the overnight guests
  • improving the extensive landscaping including planting giant spruce trees
  • landscaping gardens

“Peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.” —Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Black lives matter.

Yesterday I bicycled to the Philadelphia Art Museum with my son to join a crowd of Philadelphians who had gathered to demand justice and equality. When I was a child my parents took me to participate in the civil rights demonstrations of the 1960s, where people of all races and walks of life came together to demand change. The protests sweeping our country today have given me the same powerful sense of solidarity and an even fiercer sense of urgency.

The murder of George Floyd is not an isolated incident, but merely the latest instance of the injustice, inequality, and brutality that Black Americans have endured for centuries. Last year I visited the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, a museum which unflinchingly chronicles America’s story of slavery, racial terrorism, Jim Crow, and the world’s largest prison system.

Like many others, I was deeply moved by my visit and came away with a renewed sense of sorrow and anger. The museum is the creation of the Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit organization committed to challenging racial and economic injustice and protecting the legal and human rights of the most vulnerable people in our society. Today I arranged for Jeffrey Miller Catering to make a financial contribution to EJI, in the name of my mother, whose social activism helped mold the values I hold dear today. I encourage others to do the same.

Racism is clearly still with us, in individuals and institutions, in attitudes and prejudices. It must be denounced and fought against—by electing leaders willing to bring about change; through peaceful but firm protest; and by each of us holding ourselves personally accountable and taking what actions we can in our personal and professional lives.

Black lives matter.

Some Thoughts on the 50th Anniversary of EARTH DAY!

“Sustainability is the possibility that humans and other life flourish on the Earth forever.” — John Ehrenfeld

Fifty years ago, twenty million Americans took to the streets to protest industrial pollution and environmental destruction. It was the first “Earth Day,” a watershed event that gave ordinary citizens a chance to put their environmental concerns on the national agenda. Earth Day would eventually inspire the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, along with new laws protecting the air, land, water, biodiversity, and health of Planet Earth.

Now, I myself wasn’t there. On that day, the young Jeff Miller was probably goofing off in class and reading comic books under his desk! But the spirit of Earth Day did somehow set the tone for how we’ve built JAM Catering. Like many caterers, we bring great food and service to the table, and we put on a great party. But our business also supports the worthwhile missions of our many partner venues, from the preservation of open spaces by the Heritage Conservancy to the conservation efforts of the John J.  Audubon Center and Tyler Arboretum. Our newest venue, Bishop Farmstead, is a lovely bit of New Jersey with a beautifully restored barn and native grasslands filled with wildflowers, birds, and butterflies. It’s a gorgeous place to have a wedding, and every wedding we do there supports efforts by the Pinelands Preservation Alliance to protect the region’s unique natural lands and waterways.

Partnerships like these have generated millions of dollars to support worthwhile, sustainability-minded missions. It’s just one of many things we do to make sure our business has a net positive environmental impact. We are grateful for that first Earth Day–and for all the Earth Days since and those to come–for pointing the way.

At Waterloo Village, JAM supports the preservation of land and history, and we get to cultivate our own organic produce, eggs, and honey!

It was all sunshine and smiles as Allison and Allen celebrated their big day. Allison and Allen began their day surrounded by the people they love the most. Allison slipped into her pearly white dress and met with Allen for an adorable first look. Guests arrived and were seated for Allison and Allen’s big “I Do” moment. The ceremony was picturesque. After, guests made their way through the lush green landscapes enjoying cocktail hour where two furry guests were honored in a signature drink. The reception took place in our clear top, white tent that involved a lot of dancing under the stars. Thank you Tin Star Moments for capturing these amazing moments!
